Bio

Dr. Shirley Chan is an information studies researcher with great interest in critical perspectives on archiving, archives, technologies and data. Her research focus is archival challenges connected to digital culture and the ubiquitous use of technologies such as the web, social media platforms and AI.

She is currently exploring these themes connected to war and conflict, examining civil society and grassroots initiatives that archive digital open-source information for conflict monitoring and human rights investigations. A particular focus is placed on how they use and encounter digital technologies, such as AI, specifically computer vision and machine learning, and its implications for justice, accountability and ethics in remembrance of war and conflict.
