Stefano Sarao Mannelli

Assistant Professor

Bio

Stefano Sarao Mannelli is a WASP-AI Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology and Gothenburg University, and a Visiting Lecturer at the School of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics at Witwatersrand University. He holds a PhD in Theoretical Physics from IPhT, CEA, France. Before joining Chalmers, he was a Senior Research Fellow at the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit (UCL) and a Research Fellow at the University of Oxford.

His research interests lie at the intersection of Cognitive Science, AI, and Statistical Physics. His current work focuses on developing theoretical frameworks for AI fairness, specifically addressing how bias and toxicity evolve and adapt, and the connection between machine learning and animal learning, specifically in multi-task learning problems. His research is supported by WASP and the AI Alignment Project.

Stefano is deeply committed to the machine learning community. He serves as an Area Chair for ICLR and ICML, an Action Editor for TMLR, and a reviewer for leading journals and conferences. He regularly organises scientific gatherings to foster knowledge exchange, including the “School on Analytical Connectionism” (held in London, NYC, and Gothenburg) and workshops at major conferences such as ICLR, FAccT, and EurIPS.
